A synergy of diagnostics, medical and surgical therapies in
cardiothoracic healthcare

Dear colleagues,

We cordially invite you together with other cardiothoracic healthcare professionals to attend the 5th African Heart Seminar which will take place at Dar es Salaam, Tanzania from July 18-23, 2008.

The first two seminars were hosted in Cape Town at the Christiaan Barnard Memorial Hospital in 2004/5 and the subsequent two seminars were hosted by Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital in Kumasi and at the Central Regional Hospital and the University of Cape Coast in Cape Coast, Ghana.

This seminar started on the initiative of Professor Charles Yankah, Berlin and Dr Willie Koen, Cape Town following successful start-up of an artificial heart program during 2000 and 2001at the Christiaan Barnard Memorial Hospital, Cape Town. Both doctors are supported by their hospitals, the German Heart Institute Berlin and the Christiaan Barnard Memorial Hospital, Cape Town who also assisted in the sponsorship of this outreach initiative.The aim is especially to offer opportunities to those doctors who are unlikely to travel to Europe or USA where such conferences usually take place.

The mission is to create more awareness about the epidemic of cardiac diseases in Africa and to introduce the latest developments and medical advances in the field of cardiovascular medicine to doctors in all parts in Africa.

A further key aim is to initiate networking amongst doctors in Africa and thereby share a wealth of medical experience which has never been utilised to its potential.
Our faculty of recognized international experts in this field will highlight the echocardiographic and computer imaging diagnostics, and the most recent medical and surgical treatment for cardiovascular diseases and heart failure. The seminar will provide a live surgery session and hands-on echocardiography training course for all physicians who specialise in the treatment of heart failure.

We look forward to seeing you and to offering you the opportunity to learn from and interact with the participants at a multidisciplinary educational forum.
